Maker Lab (After School)
Peter, Martin and Paul welcome you to Maker Lab! MakerLab has the atmosphere of an art studio, woodshop, and classroom all rolled into one. Here students, budding artists, and future engineers can practice and learn techniques, gain experience with new tools (digital and physical), as well as exercise the skills required to take an idea from their heads and make it come to life. Students are welcome to bring in their own personal projects, academic assignments, or take on one of the weekly arts or engineering challenges. Students will be supported to develop skills in painting, sketching, sculpting, papercraft, woodworking, electronics, engineering, or 3D Printing. Students will be taught to engage in an iterative design process that involves goal setting, evaluating, creativity and imagination, along with regular problem solving. The complimentary skills and guidance of Peter, Martin, and Paul will help students to tackle any project, big and small.
Your Educator – Peter Forde
Peter aims to make the classroom his studio where creativity is the leader of learning. Coming from a world of traditional Ireland and teaching in the creative hub of London, England, Peter has developed a broad range of artistic experiences. He has exhibited in Ireland and England through painting, media arts, performance and theatre and sees himself as much of a teacher as an artist. Currently Peter prints at Malaspina studios in Granville Island and exhibits at galleries in Vancouver. Peter values the role of the teacher as the facilitator to the student’s creativity but draws from his technical and expressive experiences to bloom the student’s unique ability. The arts define our culture and our identity and at Brainboost we are delighted to celebrate these qualities. Expect the fun of the carnival, with the sincerity of gallery.
Your Educator – Paul Felts
Paul ‘Wally’ Felts received a BA (Hons) Degree in Animation because he likes cartoons, films, jokes and storytelling. He has since accumulated fifteen years teaching experience and was the Assistant Head teacher of an outstanding South London primary school. He has been a lead practitioner for the British Film Institutes Media Literacy program, awarded Senior Associate status at the Teaching learning Academy, nominated for a National Teaching Award and is a Specialist Schools and Academies Trust scholar. Since relocating to Vancouver six years ago he has worked as a teacher and principal in a school for gifted and talented students. ‘Wally’ enjoys Kayaking and ‘fall-off’ paddle boarding (FOP) at Jericho Beach.
Your Educator – Martin Derige
Martin hails from the icy, sunshiny land of Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he obtained a degree in Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He has worked with students of all ages, from playing dodge ball in school gyms to peer tutoring sleep-deprived engineers. He teaches math, science, and chemistry, and lives for that ‘Aha! Eureka!’ moment when the kids just get it. Martin has a healthy sense of curiosity and compassion about the world and is always seeking to connect with the cool people who are part of it, like his family and friends – and the staff and students at Brain Boost! He exercises his brain with music, gaming, visual art, design, and puzzles of all types, and exercises his body through adventures like climbing, running in the woods, and day-long hikes in the mountains. He can often be found eating spaghetti.
