You may have recently noticed that West Broadway has had a stylistic revamp. A new set of banners run on both sides of the street all the way from Benny’s Bagels on Larch Street all the way to The Eatery on Collingwood. The banners are the result of a community project featuring the efforts and businesses from people in our neighbourhood who have been here for 20 years.
The initial conceptual design came from a student at Kitsilano High School, and then 3 illustrators took on the mammoth task of illustrating the nearly 60 images of the local business owners. Emma Heckman, one of our fantastic art students, worked with me to create a set of banners that we hope reflected well upon the businesses.
Using Illustrator we transformed photographs into graphic representations. A drawing tablet allowed us to control the computer with a tool just like holding a pencil. Students love using this. Many students develop serious drawing skills throughout their life and then find out that these skills are directly transferable into graphic arts.
